The Next New Thing

I think that a type of new media that doesn’t exist would involve the use of virtual reality.  There could be a virtual reality game that allows users to be able to interact with each other, and hangout together. This type of media would be similar to Second Life where consumers can explore real and fictional places, but instead of looking at a screen they use virtual reality to give a more realistic experience.

P2P File Sharing

File sharing is making digital media such as music, movies and TV shows available to others on the Internet.  P2P file sharing is peer-to-peer distribution using a third party site.  According to the article, Should Online Scofflaws Be Denied Web Access?  “Pirates are also turning to file hosting services like RapidShare, which allow users to upload files too big to e-mail. Others can then download them from RapidShare.”  This means that people can put music and movies onto RapidShare, which allows anyone to be able to access the files.  Another P2P file sharing service is Pirate Bay.  They are a site that allows people to download content, and they also offer a service that hides a computer’s Internet address.

Privacy and Confidentiality

It is difficult for people to have privacy due to the various uses of computers and the Internet.  There are hackers who are able to break through security walls on the Internet and also capable of stealing someone’s identification.  Stolen identification can include a person’s name, address, social security number and credit card information.  Another issue is that big data brokers are able to collect any form of information about anybody. These brokers can access information such as medical information.  This type of information is supposed to be protected by law. 

Advice to the College

I think that a school, twitter account would be very beneficial.  It could be used to make important announcements regarding the school activities each day, such as days when the school is closed because of weather.   Another use Twitter could have is for individual classes.  It could be used to tell students what day a test will be, or a class cancelled. 

Another idea of integrating education with new media is by incorporating a virtual classroom setting.  Online learners, students who can’t attend a class on certain days, or alternative classroom settings could benefit by being able to log in to a site online and attend an online virtual class for any course a student is attending. 

Creativity and New Media

 

I made my own avatar in Second Life and explored the American Cancer Society.  There is a lot of things to sign up for to help stop cancer as well as there being cancer statistics.

Creativity

New media gives everyone a chance to express their ideas.  Social media sites, like Twitter, have discovered new ideas from their users.  According to the article “Twitter Serves Up Ideas From Its Followers” technology companies are active in relying on others for their ideas.  The reason they rely on others is because of the effortless way in which the information is made available allowing people to share their ideas with the use of the internet.
